- When we discussed tartan plaids back in the color section, I wonder if you queued in on my reference to 3M, the manufacturer of Scotch tape. Though Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, 3M had already developed adhesive tapes, it wasn't until 1925 that the brand name Scotch Tape was coined and registered. And even at that, not until 1944 that this brand conjured up young Scotty Mctape as a commercial spokesman. And at that, the company finally clued in and adopted the Scottish Wallace Plaid for their packaging. Seems like QUOD is one of the most natural pattern brand alignments took a terribly long route to happen. It's not the Scotch logo, there's no plaid here. But today that partan plaid in a handful of product color iterations is assuredly one of the most recognized brand elements ever created.
