As a supervisor, have you ever worked in an environment where every task seems like a top priority? Guess what? Not every task is a priority. All tasks are important, but they're not all the same. There is a difference. To help you prioritize tasks efficiently, you need the ability to assess both urgency and importance. Start by understanding urgency. Before you start on any urgent agenda item, stop and ask yourself, “What absolutely must get done first to keep everything moving?” In urgent situations, you must have a hands-on approach and be able to distinguish the tasks that are low priority up to high priority. When a stream of needs come your way, you'll need to identify which are high priority and which items can wait. Take a look at the task at hand and make a decision based on deadlines for completion, categorizing these by your recommended sense of urgency.
