The roadmap approach

You don't start a road trip without directions. Right? And yet, with many performance improvement plans, that's exactly what happens. After an improvement conversation, there may be a goal or a new destination. But, there's no map for how to get there, where or how to begin, or ways of measuring progress. To avoid this, I recommend the roadmap approach. The roadmap approach uses behavior science to encourage employee improvement. The employee takes small actions and documents them, as we talked about in the segment on goal setting. And then, just as you'd find on a real map, each action achieved reaches a mini milestone or mile marker on the journey to the new destination. Now, this approach is powerful for several reasons.
