- New and unproven technology is a whole different beast than working with technology you are familiar with. Think about the vaccine for COVID-19. The usual means of developing immunity via vaccines wasn't working. Drug companies were looking for ways to create immunity. They needed a new technology that would allow the messenger RNA, mRNA, to get into the cells and stay viable. The solution was to use lipid nanoparticles to wrap around the mRNA, which allowed it to enter cells and translate the cellular message into proteins so the immune system could recognize and respond to the protein in the future, thus providing immunity. While the mRNA approach had been experimented with before, it hadn't been used on a large scale.
