- [Instructor] Before we begin learning about reading drawings, let's learn some common terms in the mechanical field. I'll even show you some representative images and common symbols of the subject. Symbols and markings. Remember to familiarize yourself with your drawing set. Usually there is a symbol legend or chart that defines specific drawing symbols, like this. Piping. Piping is the hollow cylindrical material used to transport liquids and gases from place to place for the purpose of heating, cooling, treatment or manufacturing. Pipes can also be used to transmit hydraulic pressure used in industrial processes. An elbow bend. Going up. That's a transition in piping from the horizontal to vertical routing upwards from the ground or floor. The symbol sometimes looks like this. A pipe tee down.
