- [Instructor] Let us now talk about VLANs. VLAN refers to virtual local area network. As the name implies, it is a local area network, but virtual. And you'll be like, eh, what does it mean? Let us consider this example. Here, we got 10 computers that are currently connected to a single switch. However, what if we wanted to segment or separate the devices across two networks such that PC1 to 5 are in network A, and then PC6 to 10 are in network B. Can we do that? Well, we can do this by connecting five devices to a single switch and then the other five devices to another switch. The reason is that by default, all devices connected to the same switch belong to the same local network. However, while it is possible to have this set up, is it cost effective though? Say the switch that we are using is a 12-port switch. If we got five devices on each switch, that means five interfaces are utilized for the host, and seven are not used, and that is for each switch.
