- [Narrator] In an interview, a famous data scientist, Claudia Perlich, made an observation that there's an almost artisanal quality to good data prep. That deeply resonated with me. She was responding to the fact that many data scientists describe data prep as a nuisance. Instead, we should embrace data prep as central to the job. In fact, our next element is that data mining in general, but perhaps especially data prep, is a craft. She went on to say that we talk about data science, but it really is a kind of craft, like making shoes. I think that's a wonderful metaphor. You must have lots of practice before you're any good at it. I couldn't agree more. And I believe that our work resembles that of an artisan in another way too.
