- Do you know why a scope baseline is so important? It makes sure everyone is on the same page regarding the work that needs to be done. And because later, you can use it to help keep your project on track, and refine your schedule, budget, and resource estimates. But here's the thing, you need to develop your scope baseline in enough detail to capture all of the work necessary to complete your project, nothing more, and certainly, nothing less. This way, you'll have a solid foundation to measure your progress. It seems obvious, but how many times have you been tempted to gloss over this process? Yes, it might save time, initially, but it won't be long before poor planning leads to even poorer results. And poor planning can lead to a seemingly endless amount of unpaid work, or scope creep.
