Setting clear expectations for your project
- Let's get one thing crystal clear. If you're a project manager, you better make sure you know what you're managing. For example, a company solicits bids for a new website. The solicitation states they would like to have a website that's clean, loads fast, offers two clicks to check out, and has a low bounce rate. Although you may be tempted to kick off your project, stop and ask yourself, what's driving this new website? What is the problem they're trying to solve? What exactly does the customer expect at the end of the project? A clean, fast website might be part of the solution, but it might not be the total solution. You need to know what does success really look like? Resist the urge to begin work until these questions are answered. Slow down. You're aiming for a target you don't even know exists. Project expectations have a disproportionate impact on end results. If you dive right in, don't be surprised later on…
