What is ageism?
- When you hear the word ageism, what comes to mind? People commonly think of ageism as something that happens in the workplace, like an older person being passed over for a promotion in favor of a younger employee. While that scenario would rightly be classified as ageism, it merely scratches the surface of what ageism encompasses. Anytime we make an assumption or judgment about someone based on their age, we fall into the trap of ageism. But ageism is nuanced because it refers to our thoughts and behaviors towards people older or younger than us. It also refers to how we feel about ourselves and our own aging. The issue's also complicated because ageism can be expressed negatively and positively.
