- [Instructor] In the past, the construction sector used highly accurate hand drawn graphics to represent and communicate its works. It was not until 1955 that the industry developed the first graphical system to collect and represent data on the computer screen and that was at the Lincoln Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT. That led to the first computer-aided design, CAD, system being introduced in 1965, followed by commercial products from software vendors such as Autodesk and Bentley. The 2D advancements are followed by trade representations which eventually brought about BIM technology as we know it today. The National Institute Building Sciences and IBS defines BIM as a digital representation of a facilities physical and functional characteristics that serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about the facility, forming a level basis for decisions during its lifecycle from…
