Use your work experience to tell a story

- Two, four, and two. So what's the deal with these oddly specific numbers? They're not just random numbers. They're LinkedIn stats that prove why keeping your work experience up-to-date on your profile is a game changer. Curious what they mean? Let's dive in. First up, let's talk about the number two. Adding at least one position to your profile can get you up to two times as many profile views. So what does this mean for you in one word? Opportunity. More views equals more opportunities. So get ready to make them count. Did you just graduate and land your first job? Celebrate the win and add it to your profile. Made a big move after 10 years at the same company. That's a milestone worth sharing. Add that into. Now let's add the number four to the mix. You can receive up to four times more messages by adding at least one position to your profile. This means more opportunities landing right in your inbox. And the final number two. Did you know that you can get up to two times the connection by simply adding at least one position to your profile? That's two times more chances to grow your network and open new doors. Just started your own consulting business or switch teams within your company. Don't keep it a secret. Update your profile and let your network celebrate with you. A quick update can lead to a big impact, helping you grow your LinkedIn community in ways you wouldn't expect. Pretty awesome, right? Now that you understand the importance of keeping your LinkedIn work experience up to date, let's explore how to do it first. It's great to describe what you do in your day-to-day role, but what's even better is to highlight results you've achieved, impact you've made, or change you've led that will help your profile to stand out. Want to see how this comes to life? Let's check out my friend Jahayra's LinkedIn profile as an example. Achieved a 99.9% on-time departure rate by ensuring smooth and efficient flight operations on both domestic and international routes. Accumulating 1,500 plus flight hours annually. See how Jahayra leads with the result and impact first then breaks down how she achieved it? This approach helps her experience read stronger. Second, not all of us have worked at well-known companies in the past, and that's okay. Maybe you've worked at a startup, a small nonprofit, or a company or business you started yourself. For lesser known companies or organizations, kick things off by setting the stage with a quick one or two sentence description. You can easily do this by tapping into the company's vision or mission statement. This provides instant context that makes an impact. Jahayra starts her work experience by saying, "I'm a captain at JetBlue, an airline dedicated to inspiring humanity both in the air and on the ground." See, a simple sentence like that helps to set the context on where she works so she can dive in and talk about what she does. Finally, remember, your LinkedIn profile is your chance to shine and tell your professional story in a way that stands out. This isn't your resume, so it shouldn't read like one. Instead, think of it as a dynamic narrative. Use short, concise paragraphs in a story format and save the bullet points only for highlighting key results, metrics, and impact. Everyone has a story worth telling and your work experience section is the perfect place to lean in and own it. Speak to your journey, but don't forget to highlight how you drive results, create impact and lead change. I can't wait to read your story.
