- After many, many years of doing this type of analysis, I've learned that there are some very basic things that must be done in every root cause analysis. We've talked about them throughout this course, but they're so important that I want to make sure you've got 'em. Number one, start with analyzing the process. Businesses operate based on a collection of processes, and most often root causes will be found in one or more process steps. By going to see the process, you'll be able to observe directly where a root cause of a problem might be. In some cases, the root cause of a problem can be the lack of a documented standard process.
