- You'll be relieved to hear that adding citations online is generally more straightforward than in academic writing. I'll share clear guidelines on external links, but note, it's relevant to internal links too. You should be proactively looking for internal linking opportunities as they can help Google understand the relationships between your content assets and brand as a whole. First and most importantly, link text should be descriptive of what you're linking to. When creating content, you should consider all the possible access issues your content may be unintentionally creating. For example, anchor text that doesn't adequately describe a link makes it hard for people who may be non-sighted or have impaired vision and are using screen readers to navigate the web.
