- [Instructor] Lean originated in the post World War II era. This was the time where many economies were devastated and people had poor buying power. There was a lot of demand to rebuild factories and manufacture products with maximum efficiency. The Toyota production system was one such efficient and popular system. It was a combination of management style, working culture, and production environment that was aimed at reducing waste and manufacturing at optimal efficiency. Toyota's manufacturing process inspired Mary and Tom Poppendieck's 2003 book, "Lean Software Development," where they taught how many of these manufacturing philosophies and techniques could be applied to software development. Lean principles can be applied to software and hardware projects. Lean software development is a collection of principles centered on the key tenet to minimize waste.
