- No matter what your relationship is with your employer, there will occasionally be difficult subjects to communicate about, especially when balancing work and family. Asking for more flexible hours, requesting unexpected time off, disputing a discrepancy with healthcare coverage or pitching yourself for a promotion are all common but potentially awkward conversations. Similarly, at home with a partner, co-parents or other member of your support network or also with your children, difficult conversations are a fact of life. So communication skills are important to prioritize. Even positive conversations, like talking to your children about your career and its importance are often helped with forethought.
