Defining the S&OP process at your company
- Have you ever started a new job and asked somebody how to do something, but then you forget what they told you the very next day? It happens to me all the time, and what's worse is when I ask different people how to do the same thing, but I get different answers because sometimes it depends on which customer it is or it depends on which leader is asking or it just depends on what day of the month it is. When you try to kick off or an improve an S&OP process, it's important to have a defined and standardized workflow, and this is why we use the SIPOC framework. SIPOC diagrams can be used to communicate key elements of a process to stakeholders and make sure everyone is on the same page, but they can also be used to document existing processes or define new processes. So let's level set on the end goal. Take a look at this swim lane diagram. We ultimately want to get to this level of definition for every step of the S&OP process.
