- An amusing poem called "The Blind Man and the Elephant" imagined six people who are blind approaching an elephant from different angles. One touched the elephant's tusk and declared that an elephant is like a spear. Another touched his ear and proclaimed an elephant resembled a fan. A third touched a knee and described the elephant as a tree and so on. It's amazing that this poem, written in 1873 by John Godfrey Saxe, still captures our imaginations today. Clearly, each person had a different experience of the elephant based on where they were standing. As Professor Rufuss Miles stated, "Where you stand depends on where you sit," which is also known as Miles's Law. When you don't factor in how others are perceiving your content, we might all seem to be getting the same message, but like the six people in the poem, your audience members might be getting a different message than you intended.
