- I am told that my maternal grandfather who had immigrated from China, had amazing skills on the abacus. He had multiple businesses and was able to quickly perform complex math calculations on it. If you've ever tried using an abacus you can imagine how much practice it takes to get good at it. When my father did the family's taxes he used a brand new technology called the adding machine. You punched in these numbers and the machine spit out a little strip of paper with calculations on it. Fast forward to the 21st century and an abacus is used less for calculation and more for decoration and an adding machine is obsolete because now we have spreadsheets like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
