Applying systems thinking to product design

- [Instructor] Innovative products. Like smartphones, search engines, social networks. These have generated dramatic changes to our daily lives for the past 30 years. And they've driven the growth of the world's biggest companies. We can expect the same impact over the next 30 years and creative product designers hold the keys to this engine of growth and change. Creating this new breed of products though, requires some additional tools beyond those developed in a traditional industrial design background. This course provides those tools. Over the past 12 years, I've helped develop complex product systems that straddle the border between tangible and digital. My work typically blends physical prototyping with software development, experience design digital fabrication. I'm constantly confronted with the internal complexity of modern products. And the external complexity or interconnectedness of the product ecosystems. Throughout this course, we look at products as systems and parts of systems. We will establish visualization and modeling techniques that allow designers to bring their existing design process to bear on new product typologies. As a designer, your creative potential may be the most powerful mechanism to alleviate the challenges facing society today. Let's get started using systems thinking to unlock a little more of that creativity.
