- Let's talk about power dynamics. Too many candidates assume that all the power in the hiring process rests with the employer. And yes, the employer has the power to offer or not offer you the role, but just as they can consider multiple candidates, you can consider multiple employers. Rather than preemptively accepting second tier status, candidates need to understand what success looks like from both points of view. From an employer's point of view, a win would include getting the right candidate for the role, making an offer, and the candidate accepting. However, there are several strategic goals an employer tries to achieve beyond the offer itself. Build a long-term relationship with a candidate for future roles and possible referrals of other candidates. Check if the candidate is a fit for other roles.
