- Cultural gaps in AI development represent a significant challenge to achieving AI equity across global populations. Cultural gaps occur when AI systems are developed with insufficient awareness of diverse cultural context, resulting in technologies that work well for some communities but fail for others. These gaps emerge when development teams lack diversity, or when there's insufficient consideration of how AI will function across different cultural settings. Cultural assumptions shape AI outcomes in several key ways. First, when training data primarily reflects dominant cultures and languages, it can lead to systems that perform better for those groups while under-serving others. Next assumptions embedded in the design process may lead developers to unconsciously embed their own cultural perspectives into AI systems, creating products that work best within their respective cultural context, but may be inappropriate or ineffective in others.
