How to address avoided issues

- Suppose you're holding a meeting and Paolo, your employee, sits there with arms crossed, apparently disengaged except occasionally he rolls his eyes. Paolo's unwanted behavior becomes the elephant in the room. That's an American idiom for a big problem that everyone sees, but pretends isn't there. Every manager has an experience like this and most managers I've talked with really don't know what to do. Well, I'm going to share three skills you can work on to address that elephant in the room. The first is to state the observable behavior the first time you see it, whether that's in a team meeting or in a one-on-one. For example, Paolo's in a team meeting. Here's how to do it. "Paolo, I noticed you just rolled your eyes." Pause. Your pause will be slightly uncomfortable, but that's okay. Paolo may decide to speak up and if so, the skill worked for you.
