- I'm going to make a statement and give you a moment to decide if it's true or false. Having to fire an employee is the most difficult conversation you will ever have. The answer is false. The firing conversation only lasts a few moments. Once they're gone, you'll never have to see them again. The real difficulty is in the conversations that should have been initiated before you had to draw the line in the sand. If you've ever fired someone and they felt like the rug was pulled out from under them, it's often because a conversation was avoided. There's hundreds of reasons we avoid difficult conversations, but let's explore the two major barriers that contribute to avoidance. The first barrier is fear of emotions.
