- We tend to think about the content of an environment for LED volumes as 3D created in Unreal Engine. And this gives you maximum flexibility because everything is rendered on the fly and you have much more freedom with the camera. But what if you want to work with actual video footage and more of a rear projection mode? You can load any clip you want and use it as a 2D background, but let's say you still want to move the camera or start with a background that's a bit more dynamic. You can use live compositing to land on a 2.5D, which is to say not 2D video nor a completely 3D environment solution. This approach was leveraged extensively on the HBO Max production, "Our Flag Means Death". The filmmakers, led by my good friend visual effects supervisor, Sam Nicholson ASC, wanted to shoot a pirate story on the high seas, but they didn't want to go film on location.
