- [Instructor] You might have already heard the terms virtual hard disk and virtual machine either at work or in your studies. Let's explore the differences. A virtual hard disk is an area on a physical disk that looks and acts like a physical disk, but isn't. It's a virtual storage area. It's a file, actually, and has a file format, either VHD or VHDX. You can create a virtual hard disk using Microsoft Hyper-V Manager, Disk Management and PowerShell. Once you've created the virtual disk, you can install an operating system on it if you want to. With this done, people often start to refer to the entire unit as a single virtual machine. But a virtual hard disk is separate from a virtual machine. A hard disk provides a place for the machine to reside. A virtual machine often has an operating system and emulates a traditional computer system.
