Hardware, feature, and compatibility requirements

- [Instructor] Before you install Windows 11 on any device whether it's a clean install or upgrade, or even to a virtual machine, you need to make sure that the device meets the minimum requirements for installation. Here are those minimums. Keep in mind that these are the absolute minimums, though. Some Windows features require additional hardware. For example, if you want to log into Windows using facial recognition or a fingerprint, you'll need compatible hardware to support that. The minimum requirements are as follows. You'll need a one gigahertz processor or faster with two or more cores. It will need to be on a compatible 64 bit processor or System on a Chip. You'll need 4 gigabytes of RAM, a 64 gigabyte or larger storage device, and system firmware that is UEFI, Secure Boot capable. You'll need a TPM chip, you'll need a compatible graphics card, and you'll need a high definition display that's greater than 8 inches diagonally and supports 8 bits per color channel. All Windows 11 additions need internet access. In all Windows 11 additions, you'll need a Microsoft account as well to use some of the features. Windows 11 Home requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account. You can find a list of feature-specific requirements for Windows 11 here. As we scroll through these, choose the features that are a must-have for you, and make sure the device you'll use will support these features. Here's Client Hyper-V, one of my favorites, and Windows Hello, which supports biometrics. As noted here, Client Hyper-V requires a processor with second-level address translation capabilities, and an addition of Windows Pro or greater. And Windows Hello requires biometric-specific hardware. Snap is another option I like and offers three column layouts, and it requires a screen that is 1,920 effective pixels or greater in width. And you can see here, two-factor authentication requires use of a pin, biometric hardware like a fingerprint reader or illuminated infrared camera, or a phone with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth capabilities. Spend a little time going over the rest of this list on your own. If you see a feature you like, make sure that device you're going to install Windows 11 on has the hardware you need, and so that you can purchase the proper Windows edition.
