- I was 35 when I got exhausted from ironing my hair, and discovered that I had beautiful curls all along. I grew up in Venezuela and even there, I was subjected to beauty standards. I never saw women of color celebrated for their beautiful natural hair. In fact, we didn't see this until a few years ago. I had been so beauty washed, that I even felt a little uneasy doing this very course with my natural hair. My story is just a spec in the stories of others worldwide, who have felt that they don't fit a mold or feel cast out and need to hide their disabilities, color, culture, or beliefs. Now imagine the impact on the lives of our youth and even, adults when we use inclusive imagery. Not to fulfill a diversity checklist, but using it to honor and celebrate our diversity in our communities. What if we all build more empathy into our storytelling?
