Find the right tone
- [Instructor] Text-based communication can be wonderfully efficient but it also carries a greater risk of being misinterpreted than voice or face-to-face communication. It lacks the subtle cues we give with our voice inflections, looks, and body language. Almost everyone has misread a message at some point, missing this sarcasm or humor or even the respect that was intended. So it's especially important to think about the tone you're creating when you write. Who you're writing to plays a big part in determining what tone is acceptable. For example, when I was working on my first book I got to know my editor quite well and our emails often ended up being very casual, skipping the greetings and salutations, using casual language and an occasional emoji, kidding each other and sharing personal stories and so on.
