The second part of the fifth round of Plastics Treaty negotiations (INC-5.2) has adjourned after a haphazard process that extended the negotiations for an extra day, but ended without a clear agreement on the path forward. Civil society urges world leaders to persevere towards a strong, legally binding treaty that cuts plastic production and protects human health, human rights, and the environment. Most countries support a treaty that limits plastics production and establishes restrictions on certain toxic chemicals. A smaller group, led by oil-producing countries such as Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iran, Malaysia, and Kuwait, advocates maintaining the agreement's focus on collecting plastic waste and improving recycling.
