Architecture Meets Nature — Biophilic Design As architecture adapts to climate and location, the boundary between constructed form and environment becomes a canvas for daring experimentation. The following article looks at how architecture may interact with edges, whether they be riverbanks, shorelines, or forest floors. Each notion reinterprets the relationship between humans and the environment in a unique way, combining material, ritual, and ecological. Illinois Tech College of Architecture welcomes Peruvian architect Kevin Malca as the 2025 Jeanne and John Rowe Fellow. His research investigates how indigenous practices—such as the water-harvesting “qochas” of Peru’s Quispillacta community—can shape ecological and sustainable approaches to contemporary architecture. Through teaching and a funded research project, Malca will examine the ways ancestral knowledge informs modern design, offering new frameworks for thinking about architecture as an interconnected cultural, ecological, and social system. https://lnkd.in/gWNBWuKC

I absolutely love tracing the steps of previous architects, particularly on historically significant structures like this 1846 gem. Here, the entire rear portion of the structure is new and is based entirely on the "front" building's details. Through their details and proportions, I couldn't help but appreciate the thoughtfulness they imbued. There was a sensitivity to the materials and their ordering that was different—whoever designed this little Greek beauty was thinking a little differently than their contemporaries. In this sense, I feel every architect needs to do this at least a dozen times as an introduction, and if you are into adaptive reuse and historical preservation, you finally "get it" after your 50th project. Through this, you become well-rounded and useful. Any architect who masters historical buildings will always be busy—our society values preservation. But this requires one to drop their ego, and that goes against everything modern society says to do. The same goes for architecture schools—it’s all about "your vision" and discovering "your" style. There are grains of truth in that, but it is reserved for the top 5% of architects. #historical #preservation #architecture

The ACN lecture by Jan Peter Wingender is now available online (in Dutch): https://lnkd.in/eQeQXSDj On 2 September, architect/partner Jan Peter Wingender (Office Winhov) spoke at the NYMA makersplaats about ‘Contextual Design: The Art of Adaptive Reuse.’ His central question: how do you breathe new life into old buildings without erasing their history? Jan Peter built his argument around the theme of ‘doubt’ and illustrated this with examples from his own practice and architectural and art history. This was the third lecture in the four-part ACN Architectuurcentrum Nijmegen series on contextual architecture – architecture that is sensitive to its surroundings and creates new connections. #officewinhov #janpeterwingender #ACN #NYMA #repurposing #architecture #lecture #sustainability #heritage #contextualdesign
