An interactive simulation is giving people the chance to better understand what living with dementia can feel like, from the frustration of forgetting everyday tasks to the stress of managing distractions. Many who try it say the experience changes how they view and support loved ones facing cognitive decline. Beyond personal reflection, these kinds of programs can also shape how we design spaces, train caregivers, and build more compassionate communities for those affected. #DementiaAwareness #EmpathyInCare #Technology #Healthcare https://lnkd.in/gVAe_4cd

🧠 Dementia is NOT a normal part of aging. One of the most common misconceptions I hear is that dementia is an inevitable consequence of getting older. This myth can be harmful—it delays diagnosis, discourages prevention, and fuels stigma. In this video, Lance A. Slatton explains why dementia is a distinct medical condition, not just “part of aging”: ✔️ Dementia is caused by diseases, not aging itself ✔️ Not all older adults will develop it ✔️ Younger people can also be affected ✔️ Early intervention matters By challenging misconceptions, we can: 🔹 Encourage timely assessments & treatment 🔹 Promote healthier brain lifestyles 🔹 Support those living with dementia with dignity 👉 Let’s spread the truth: aging does not equal dementia. Together, we can change perspectives and improve care. #dementia #aging #myths #stigmas #factis #awareness #caregiving #caregivers #caregiver #memory #memorycare #debunk #myth #alzheimer #alzheimers #dementiaawareness #dementiatips #dementiacare #dementiasupport #endalz #stopalz #help #health #healthcare

Choosing care with compassion – A reflection for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month It’s estimated that 70% of people in care homes live with dementia or severe memory problems, a sobering reminder of how vital it is to ensure these environments offer not just safety, but dignity and compassion. For carers and families, the decision to move a loved one into a care home is never taken lightly. It’s often made after months, sometimes years, of physical and emotional strain, sleepless nights, and heartfelt conversations. Guilt, grief, and uncertainty can weigh heavily, even when it’s the right choice for everyone’s wellbeing. As we mark Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, it’s important to support families through this transition and help them know what to look for. Here are five key things to consider when choosing a care home: 1. Person-centred care: Does the home tailor support to the individual’s needs, preferences, and history? 2. Staff training in dementia care : Are carers equipped to understand and respond to the complexities of dementia? 3. Environment and atmosphere: Is the space calm, welcoming, and easy to navigate for someone with memory loss? 4. Family involvement: Are families encouraged to stay involved in care planning and daily life? 5. Cultural sensitivity and inclusivity: Does the home respect and reflect the cultural background and values of its residents? Every person living with dementia deserves to feel safe, valued, and understood. And every carer deserves support in making one of the hardest decisions they’ll ever face. Let’s keep raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and building a future where dementia care is rooted in empathy and respect. #AlzheimersAwarenessMonth #Dementia #Carers#CompassionateCare #CareHomes #PersonCentredCare #Dementia #HealthEquity #InclusiveCare #MemoryLoss #SupportForCarers Alzheimer's Society Alzheimer's Association® Alzheimer's Research UK Dementia Community NHS England Carers UK Carers Trust Sharon DeSouza Geraldine McMurdie Daniela Russo Anietie Akpan Bettina Wallace Rianna Patterson MBPS Moïse Roche

We need to stop making people fight for a dementia diagnosis, and then fight again for support. New data from Alzheimer’s Society (a truly amazing initiative and vitally important to care in the UK) shows that one in five people affected by dementia receive no support at all. Of those who do, less than half are happy with it. You’d think in 2025 we’d be further ahead than this. There are long waits, multiple confusing diagnosis processes, and carers feeling ignored or judged in everything. This isn’t just a policy problem; it’s a massive, massive problem in care. If you work in the sector, the message is clear: we need to make things easier, faster, and more human, especially for people facing one of the hardest journeys of their lives. #Dementia #SocialCare #DementiaSupport #CareSector #HomeCare #CareHomes

What if we stopped trying to “fix” dementia distress and started looking differently at the problem instead? That’s exactly what the Dementia Learning Centre is doing: using a systems-thinking lens to understand distress not as something to suppress, but as something to solve with the person, their whānau and the environment around them. It’s a powerful shift, one that could transform how we care. 💡 Read more ➡️ https://ow.ly/whgB50WNWiG 🎓 And register for our upcoming Summit to explore these approaches alongside fellow leaders and practitioners ➡️ https://ow.ly/RIau50WNWiJ #DementiaCare #DementiaLearning #SystemicThinking #AlzheimersNZ #Dementia #MateWareware

What if supporting caregivers was as crucial as treating the condition itself? Driven by a desire to fill a critical gap, one professional and their wife, a psychiatrist, sought to create a resource for families navigating Alzheimer's and dementia. While much focus is placed on the individual with dementia, the profound needs of caregivers often go unmet. This realization sparked a mission to build a local entity dedicated to these unsung heroes, aiming to ensure that "no one should have to manage Alzheimer's disease or dementia by themselves." It was an honor to address this imbalance and offer meaningful support to those providing care. How do you think communities can better support caregivers? #DementiaCare #CaregiverSupport #AlzheimersAwareness #CommunityHealth #HealthcareInnovation

🔓OPEN ACCESS ARTICLE | How can we better support family caregivers of people living with dementia—beyond offering respite? In a recent article published in the Canadian Journal on Aging/La Revue canadienne du vieillissement, CREGÉS member Darla Fortune and co-author Amélie Gauthier-Gilbert explore how the well-being of caregivers is connected to their ability to engage in meaningful leisure activities and maintain social connections. The findings remind us that caregivers need more than time away—they need opportunities that affirm their identities, connections, and sense of mattering. 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e5h5ZS-f
