In the lead up to #EarthDay, I sat down with some of our fabulous Associates across Mars, early in their careers, passionate about sustainability, and (most importantly!!) ready to challenge how we think about impact. Big thanks to Emma Dayton, Kyle Winkler, Vini Pathak and Megan Sullivan for sharing your time and insights !! I'm all about 360 listening and learning, and I was on a mission to find out what matters to the next generation when it comes to sustainability. What really came through was how it’s not just the big, global challenges that are important, but how those play out in the day-to-day. What struck me was the clarity and urgency in their thinking. They care deeply about the planet, and they’re asking the right questions ….. 👉 What difference can we make as individuals through our work / role? 👉 Where should we focus - our learning, actions - to have the biggest impact? 👉 How can we keep challenging ourselves and Mars to progress towards big 2030 and 2050 goals? I learned that for Gen Z, it’s not enough to work for a company with bold goals....they want to know their actions ( big and small) are driving real change. They want to contribute to system-wide transformation while seeing meaning in everyday choices. At Mars, we’re making big moves at a macro level. Through initiatives like Moo'ving Dairy Forward and our Unreasonable Food partnerships, we’re focused on investing across our ecosystem for the greatest impact. And, we also need to make the connection back to what people are doing every single day: reducing food waste, ditching paper receipts…. even just starting conversations that challenge how we think. So, this Earth Day, I’m reminded that the next generation isn’t waiting for permission to make an impact - they’re already doing it! And they're passionate. As leaders, our role is to listen, learn, and create that space for younger generations to make a difference. #ProudlyMars #EarthDay
This is great to read, Amanda. In a previous life I spent some time as the chairperson of the Northern Ireland Youth Forum which sought to “promote the voice of young people” and it always struck me that one of the best ways of doing it for those in positions of influence was so simple: listen with curiousity.
