When I was leading my university’s debating society, we had a clever tactic we used in competitions like the German-Speaking Debate Championship. If the other team had already used every strong argument, you didn’t try to argue louder. You changed the frame of the debate. Partnerships work the same way. Everyone can stack integrations, logos, and APIs. But differentiation comes when your ecosystem delivers something others can’t: adoption, loyalty, and outcomes that touch the end user. Partnerships are about what changes for the customer.

When I started my career 15 years ago at Teralys Capital, the Canadian tech ecosystem was still recovering from the 2008 crash. The big issue back then was clear: 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. 15 years later, the ecosystem is stronger than ever, but commercialization and GTM scaling are still the biggest blockers in every report I read.
