Simplicity is the most underrated growth lever. At Coverflex, we just launched a new self-service flow in Italy for freelancers and small companies (1-10 employees). It is also about anticipating how the system should scale tomorrow (other markets, other products, other needs), not just work today. 3. Make it real on the front end. We shipped the first testable version, built it directly into our website, and started to collect internal feedback early. 4. Integrate payments and Finance processes. Stripe connections, bank transfer options, and full alignment with Finance. 5. Coordinate with local teams and Ops. Some parts of the flow still need human handling. Account creation, access validation. Ops worked relentlessly to map and define what stays manual and how to make it seamless for the user. 6. Address security concerns. No shortcuts here. Every flow needs to be airtight, not just functional. 7. Polish the experience. Final tweaks, copy improvements, micro-interactions. The details matter when you want people to feel confidence in the product. 8. Test, break, fix, repeat. QA at scale. Every bug logged. Every feedback loop closed. Functionality is nearly invisible when it works, but painfully obvious when it doesn’t. The result? The fastest self-service flow on the market, that now lets freelancers and small companies buy Buoni Pasto 🍕 or Buoni Acquisto 🛒 in just a few clicks. I meet founders from different industries almost every day. Sometimes they reach out for technical help, sometimes for a product roadmap review, sometimes to troubleshoot issues with scaling their platform or making technology decisions. Just this past week, I spoke with founders in fintech, e-commerce, and health tech. Brilliant visionaries. Deep industry knowledge. Immense drive. But they were all struggling with the same problem: they lacked a strong technical co-founder. Each of them was paddling forward blindly — outsourcing product builds, relying on freelancers, or trying to stitch together advice from multiple vendors. They didn’t have a clear sense of what they had built, where the gaps were, or how to move from stage one to stage two. And this isn’t an isolated case. It’s a pandemic in the startup ecosystem. But...The client pays on Net-60 terms. You get $0 cash today. The Reality: Your "profit" is $30k. Your cash flow  is -$10k. You are in the red. This is the Silent Killer affecting many startups. The Fix (The Antidote): 1.  Get Paid Faster:  Offer a 2% discount for annual plans paid upfront. Switch from Net-60 to Net-15. Stop being your client's free bank. 2.  Know Your Runway: Calculate: (Cash in Bank) ÷ (Monthly Burn Rate). This is your oxygen countdown. Check it weekly so you know when you are running out of money. 3.  Run Lean: Every SaaS tool, every new hire—question it. Does this expense directly help us get to the next milestone? One of the most counterintuitive (but great) pieces of advice I ever got as a young cash-strapped startup founder was that I should hire expensive consultants. On the surface it makes no sense.  You've barely got a few tens of thousands of angel dollars in the bank, and what you *really* need is to attract young scrappy talent who will work for ramen & glory.  Why would you blow any precious dollars on senior talent? But that's the thing.  Startups shouldn't have to blow *that* much money on consultants.  Just the bare minimum to steer you in the right direction and inspire confidence among the rest of your team. After all, your goal as founder is to hire the *right* people.  And if you can't afford the best (senior) *full-time* employees (at first), you can at least buy *a few hours* of those people's time here and there, to ensure that your scrappy full-timers are working on the right things. This could be anything from a fractional CTO/CMO/CFO, to a senior Product or UX design consultant, to a senior HR & Ops veteran who ensures that your junior ops manager is setting up the right PEO or QuickBooks integrations for long-term success.  Monthly check-ins may be all you need. Remember that your early team DNA will set the tone for the rest of your company's future, and you can't afford to just be winging it by setting up important processes in the dark.  Not every company is founded by 20+ year veterans, or has committed "advisors" ready to devote their weekends to reviewing your complex marketing plan in exchange for 0.1% in stock options that will probably be worth $0. Pay up for good senior hourly talent to help steer you, and your team will emerge with more confidence in their founder for having set them up for success.

See the job market and think "F this I'm going solo" -- But be realistic and eyes open. Here's what the "rah rah solopreneur" crowd won't tell you. 68% of freelancers report unpredictable income streams. 19% deal with isolation and loneliness. 62% struggle to find clients during slow periods. And get this: solopreneurs think they need to earn $219,000 to feel successful. Only 20% actually hit $100k-$300k without outsourcing.* The economic pressure is real. 57% of solopreneurs say inflation forced them to find additional income sources. Job security is dead, so everyone's being told to "go solo." After 20 years building and selling B2B services companies, I've seen both sides. The freedom is real. So are the 3 AM panic attacks about next month's revenue. The LinkedIn gurus selling courses on "effortless solopreneurship" either haven't done it long enough to hit the hard parts, or they're conveniently forgetting them. Here's what they don't mention: → Cash flow swings that'll make your head spin → The loneliness of having no team to brainstorm with → Feast or famine cycles that test your mental health → You're the CEO, accountant, marketer, and janitor → No sick days. No vacation days. Just you. This doesn't mean don't do it. It means prepare for it. Build a 6-12 month cash cushion if you can (OR nail down a first supporting client right away) before you jump (or get pushed). Find communities of other solopreneurs who get it. Set boundaries so you don't work 80-hour weeks just because you can. The writing is on the wall - more people are going to be forced into self-employment whether they're ready or not. Layoffs, AI, economy, whatever. The question isn't whether you'll need these skills. Looking at MYOB's Mid Market Report, the Top five business goals for the mid-market for the next five years: 1: Expand the size of the business 2: Expand from a local to a national level 3: Increase our revenue 4: Start exporting 5: Become an international business Where are you placed to achieve the goals applicable to you? Before you grow, you first need to get your house in order, because over half of all businesses aren't prepared to grow because their infrastructure wont scale. Growth stalls as they audit their systems to find out what's holding them back but, in the meantime, they aren't able to meet commitments which can damage reputation and lead to financial issues. Tacking on software on the fly is ok at the start when you are bootstrapping a start-up but the moment you realise you have something of value and you can see it's got legs, working out if you are set to scale should be one of the first things you should do. Auditing your systems is never fun and it never feels like there is a good time, but doing a health check early is far less painless that doing it when you are growing at pace and already outgrowing your tech stack.
