AI in urban planning is evolving fast — and we’re watching it with a mix of awe and caution. 🧠⚡ It’s not just about speed anymore. These generative models are starting to recognize relationships in urban layouts. They’ve seen enough data to understand that certain patterns tend to work: 🏙 Mid-rise clusters with shared courtyards 🌳 Low-rise blocks around central green spaces 🚉 Mixed-use developments around transit hubs But here’s the twist: The AI doesn’t actually understand why those patterns work. It just knows they show up again and again in the data it’s been trained on. Give it a site boundary and a few inputs, and it returns something that looks right — layouts that feel familiar, realistic, and even polished. That’s the amazing (and slightly unsettling) part: These designs look like they’ve come from an experienced team — not from an algorithm matching patterns. And yes, you can now generate hundreds of iterations in an afternoon. But deciding which ones actually make sense? That still depends on us. On context. On human judgment. The tools are getting smarter. But design decisions are still very human. #UrbanDesign #Architecture #AIDesign #ComputationalDesign #MachineLearning #ArtificialIntelligence #GenerativeDesign #BIM #AECInnovation #DesignTools #DigitalDesign

AI as a Creative Partner in Architecture Through my recent experiments, I’ve realized that AI isn’t here to replace architects it’s a tool that enhances creativity, speeds up the design process, and helps visualize ideas faster. From brainstorming concepts to refining sketches and creating high-quality renders, AI allows us to focus on what really matters: design, creativity, and innovation. ✨ AI x Architecture: Materiality & Atmosphere — Heydar Aliyev Center ✨ How do materials, textures, and light reshape the way we perceive architecture? In this exploration, I used the Heydar Aliyev Center to study how finishes and atmospheric conditions can transform its iconic flowing form. Subtle variations in surface and lighting dramatically alter the building’s perception, offering architects rapid ways to visualize and refine design intent. 👉 What do you think—could AI become a useful partner in testing different material or lighting scenarios before committing to a design? Thanks to Simi Launay and Litehaus for enabling this exploration. #Architecture #AI #DesignInnovation #Materiality #Atmosphere

AI's Role in Democratizing Architecture: A Double-Edged Sword https://lnkd.in/gei329UQ Rethinking Design: AI’s Role in Urban Planning In Hastings, mayoral candidate Steve Gibson sparked debate with an AI-generated proposal for an apartment building over the War Memorial Library. While aimed at funding a heritage upgrade, architect Mat Brown highlights critical shortcomings in Gibson's approach. Key Insights: AI & Design Limitations: Gibson’s crude image, while cost-effective, fails to comply with council planning regulations and could threaten national heritage. Importance of Process: Drawing isn’t just to visualize; it carries responsibility. Effective architecture balances numerous factors, from regulations to community needs. The Democratization of Ideas: Technology allows anyone to create compelling visuals, but without rigorous foundations, these ideas can mislead. As we navigate an AI-driven future, remember: a well-communicated bad idea is still a bad idea. Let’s advocate for thoughtful design processes! 💬 Join the conversation! Share your thoughts on the balance of AI and architecture. Source link https://lnkd.in/gei329UQ

INFORM architect Ramon Corpuz is at the Detroit Institute of Arts today for Lawrence Tech College of Architecture and Design's AI-powered design workshop during Detroit Month of Design. Participants are using AI tools like MidJourney to reimagine artifacts from the First Industrial Revolution and create speculative objects for a future DIA collection. It’s a bold exploration of how AI can fuel creativity, bridge history with possibility, and spark new ideas for the future of design. The work produced will be curated and on display at the DIA during the panel discussion “Designing with Intelligence: An AI Collection of Speculative Objects” on Thursday, September 25. Events like this push the boundaries of design thinking, and INFORM is committed to exploring how innovation shapes Detroit’s future.
