Battery-powered UAVs are proving invaluable for protecting North America’s aging energy infrastructure. Instead of only reacting to failures, utilities are now using drones for proactive inspection, scanning pipelines and powerlines frequently to catch issues before they cause outages. Utility leaders also see future roles in transporting critical payloads. These demanding missions require longer flight times and heavier sensor payloads, made possible by new advances in battery endurance and lightweight materials. The result: drones are evolving from a “nice to have” into a core tool for grid resilience. The largest wind tunnel in Poland – where we study drones, aircraft and wind turbines, developing renewable energy technologies and improving air safety. Yes, it’s really cool to have such a tunnel! #WindTunnel #AerospaceResearch #Drones #WindEnergy #AirSafety 🔗Polish version here: https://lnkd.in/dJ9HgGBF Large Wind Tunnel Introduction to the wind tunnel description. Morning dilemma: “I have a large wind tunnel. Is that cool?” Analysis. Wind tunnel. What is it? Simply, a tunnel through which air flows. Why do I need it? To study the flight of drones and airplanes, cars, photovoltaic panels, VAWT and HAWT wind turbines, parachutes, heat exchangers, flow channels, resonant exhaust systems, ventilation ducts, façade louvers, and a million other things that operate surrounded by air. Does the tunnel work for measuring flying objects that usually operate in open space? Yes, perfectly. Physically, it makes no difference whether a drone flies at 100 km/h through the air, or stands still while air flows past it at 100 km/h. Within the limits of common sense and measurement needs, these situations are identical. Wouldn’t it be better to measure “in flight”? No, because it’s impossible. We can’t put full equipment into a drone weighing 249 g—or even one weighing 10 kg. We can’t place sensors inside a running engine. We won’t chase a slow glider with cars full of cameras. We won’t wait 1,000 years for a stable 10 m/s wind, and another 10,000 for 15 m/s. We won’t align two flying unmanned platforms at 120 km/h with centimeter accuracy for half an hour. We won’t measure deformations on rooftop photovoltaic panels in extreme wind. We won’t measure torque on a wind turbine shaft delivering power to the grid. In our tunnel, we can do all of this. What does it mean that this tunnel is large? Semantics—it really is very large. The test section where models are placed is 2 × 2 m in cross-section and 4 m long. The entire tunnel is over 15 m long and 6 m high. The largest and most modern in Poland. Designed and built for measurements that were previously impossible or unnecessary in our country. Today they are needed. Large tunnel, high speeds—up to 150 km/h continuous flow. This requires huge power: at the outlet we have 16 fans, each 16 kW. Together over 250 kW—more than a quarter of a megawatt at the click of a mouse. The tunnel is fully equipped with measurement systems, including several unique ones. Conclusion and a bit of self-hugging: Yes, it is indeed very cool to have such a wind tunnel. https://lnkd.in/d2xnBZ3s

🌊 We’re working to close critical data gaps in the deep ocean—without sending a single person to sea. Fugro and NOAA Ocean Exploration have signed a five-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement to accelerate deep-ocean mapping and characterisation. This partnership brings together NOAA’s scientific expertise and Fugro’s remote and autonomous technologies. Using uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), electric remotely operated vehicles (eROVs), and cloud-based data workflows, we aim to deliver real-time insights from one of the planet’s least understood regions. This information will help inform responsible decisions about offshore energy, marine resource management and national security. Powered by innovation and shared purpose, it’s another example of how together, we’re helping create a safe and liveable world. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eAqwWTCC

We recently trialled drone technology at our Onslow Power Station solar farm to capture infrared and high-resolution imagery and identify solar panels with defects - and the results were impressive! This approach gives us a faster, safer and more accurate way to inspect panels, revealing issues that aren’t visible from the ground and helping us plan maintenance more efficiently. In fact, what can takes two people up to two days on the ground was completed in just 20 minutes using a drone, with issues identified and fixed by team members immediately. Thanks to the team at Sensorem for supporting this trial and producing a great video that showcases the benefits of this technology.
