The Last Mile of Data Trust For years, the data world has obsessed over speed and scale. - We built faster pipelines. - We scaled warehouses to petabytes. - We automated ingestion at the click of a button. And yet when it comes to the moment of decision, trust often falls apart. This is the last mile problem in data: The journey from a number on a screen to a decision in a human brain.Why does trust break here? -> Because definitions live in docs/sharepoint/company wiki pages, not in dashboards. -> Because lineage graphs exist, but its messy -> Because freshness checks are built, but aren’t surfaced when it matters. -> Because AI assistants “hallucinate” when they don’t know context. We’ve treated data like a technical asset to deliver not a human experience to design. The shift we need: -> From Delivery to Understanding - Not just shipping tables, but embedding meaning into every metric. -> From Portals to In-Context Trust - Surface lineage, ownership, and freshness in the moment of decision (inside dashboards, AI responses, slack thread, meet user where they are). -> From Static Docs to Interactive Dialogue - A number should never be a dead end. It should be explorable, explainable, and trustworthy (How these tables are transformed, which SQLs were used). The future isn’t just “big data.” It’s believable data. What’s important in the Data Industry? Tools? AI? Both? Or Something More? I have been surrounded by a lot of tools for the last 1.5 decades of industry experience. I have seen a lot more tools than a typical data architect. But as you know, nowadays, it’s all these tools + AI-powered solutions. I have read somewhere that these AI models are gonna take away entry-level jobs in the coming years. So here’s the question: What keeps you in place when that time comes? What keeps you in the industry despite the AI still taking over? I would say- ▪️ Keep learning not only about data tools but also the use of AI in them ▪️ Don’t just aim to be a master of one, be a jack of all trades ▪️ Build diversity in your knowledge base But why? “Because the wider your perspective, the better your business understanding is!!” A broader base enables smarter solutioning, you start connecting dots others don’t even see. Your Data IS AI-Ready. Stop Making Excuses. I recently polled you on why 95% of AI pilots fail to reach production. The winner? "Data is not AI-ready" at 62%. This excuse is driving me insane. Here's the uncomfortable truth: If you're running Tableau dashboards, Power BI reports, or ANY analytics today, your data is absolutely AI-ready. You've already solved the hard problems - data modeling, business logic, metric definitions. So why are we all lying to ourselves? The real culprit isn't your data quality. It's that you're trying to boil the ocean. Stop building AI castles in the sky. Start with AI cottages on solid ground. Pick ONE high-value use case. Use the same clean, modeled data that powers your existing dashboards. Layer conversational AI on top. Ship it. Learn. Iterate. Please, don't forget that your "messy" data powered business decisions for years through traditional BI. Suddenly it's not good enough for AI? That's not data quality talking - that's fear. Everyone enjoys the view of the skyline. No one celebrates the foundation. In data, that's the difference between dashboards, ML models, and shiny AI pilots and the invisible grind of data modelling, data lineage, and schema governance. You don't get applause for data governance. It’s like pouring the concrete foundation—unglamorous but non-negotiable. Without it, your pipelines will break, your data will become inconsistent, and your models will drift. Everything above it will eventually crack. The painful truth: Most “AI transformations” fail because the data foundation is built on quicksand, not concrete. Then we blame the data scientists or the BI tools. But the problem isn't the tools. It’s the data engineering. If you want analytics that drive decisions and AI that actually works, stop obsessing about the view.
