The risks jump from nerd-cave ransomware to global chaos real quick when AI can optimize attacks faster than any human hacker. Everyone talks about AI ethics, but barely anyone’s talking about evil AI evolution on the dark side. Hope your incident response team has AI muscle too, or you’re sitting ducks. Oh, and yeah, reset those backups. Because this is gonna get ugly.

While we were enjoying our weekend, hackers quietly scored a hat-trick with AI. After the world’s first AI-powered ransomware and then the first AI-enabled supply chain attack, we now have the first confirmed malware built using GPT-4. Researchers have uncovered a tool called MalTerminal that uses GPT-4 to write ransomware code on the spot or open up a backdoor for attackers. It doesn’t just follow a script. It generates one in real time, adapting to the environment it lands in. A few weeks ago, we saw PromptLock, a ransomware that uses AI to pick its targets, steal data, and even write its ransom notes. Then came a supply-chain attack on software developers, where hackers used AI to sneak malicious code into tools many companies rely on. Now, with MalTerminal, the picture is complete: AI isn’t helping hackers write better phishing emails anymore. It’s running the attack itself. Malware that can rewrite itself doesn’t give defenders days or weeks to react. It gives them minutes. Which is why awareness isn’t just about spotting dodgy emails. It’s about understanding how fast the ground is shifting, and why every person in an organisation needs to know how their actions fit into defence. The technology is new. The lesson is old. You can’t fight what you don’t understand.

AI-orchestrated ransomware is entering a new phase. NYU researchers recently demonstrated a prototype called Ransomware 3.0 that uses large language models (LLMs) to autonomously build and execute ransomware attacks. The system handles reconnaissance, payload generation, and extortion - all driven by natural language prompts inside the binary. This proof of concept highlights an advancement in the threat model: attacks built to adapt dynamically across environments, changing behavior at runtime. Experts point out that many controls already in place (i.e., baseline hygiene, identity governance, segmentation) help here.
