He was just 22. Just 6 months into the service. Became immortal and left a legacy behind. He is 2/Lt. Rakesh Singh Malhan of the 22 GRENADIERS, Ashok Chakra(P). 5th December 1992, an encounter broke out between 8 Afghan Terr*orists and the Indian Armed Forces in the Shopian Distt. of Jammu and Kashmir. The Afghans were flushed out from their hideout but they were successful in fleeing. In a daring attempt, 2/Lt. Rakesh Malhan flung into action and tried to cut the escape route of the fleeing terr*rists. He single handedly eliminated 5 of the Afghans while sustaining multiple bullet shots. He did not stop firing and kept pushing his limits even when he was on the ground and bleeding. The young boy did not get up and could not be saved. For his heroics and unmatched bravery, 2/Lt. Rakesh Singh Malhan was awarded India's highest peacetime gallantry award, The Ashok Chakra, posthumously. Remembering the legend, the forever young and super handsome, 2/Lt. Rakesh Singh Malhan on his 55th Birth Anniversary today.
At the age of 22, he was the youngest recipient of The Ashok Chakra until Ptr. Sanjog Chhetri, in the year 2003 and at the age of 20 earned himself Ashok Chakra, posthumously.
If I’m right 22 got two Ashok Chakra’s in valley. Great paltan, was in Dalhousie when they moved to valley in 92. We wish the Paltan all the best. Om Sadgati to the brave heart.
In 1992 this great Battalion 22 Grenadiers was the youngest in the Regiment. Its very young company commanders were full of initiative and drive. Its soldiers were highly disciplined and motivated. They were masters of operating in counter insurgency environment and surely deserve all respect.
Many serve but only a few get to be in such situations and even fewer manage to do.what he did. The glory is worth a lifetime.
Feel pain ,when you see that supreme bravery .and sacrifice is not truly admired by admin and pillars of democracy ,who believe in self growth ,nepotism and political dynasty. Well done officer! You make us proud

No words for his supreme sacrifice for the nation. His valor needs to be communicated to so called Gen Z to make them understand what actual values our society used to have for Maa Bharati. Jai Hind, Jai Hind ki Sena.
Possibly the only person on LinkedIn who is NOT a leader, Influencer, motivated, result oriented, achiever, visionary, etc etc!
3dNeedless to say, do share the story with your family and friends.
