“We need to add more than voice to AII.” That was the bold message from Dr. Mar Gonzalez-Franco, Research Scientist & Manager at Google XR, during her keynote at Digitalize in Stockholm — and it’s a message worth paying attention to. As AI accelerates far beyond human communication speed, Mar argues we’ve hit a “prompt problem.” Speech delivers only ~39 bits/second — a bottleneck compared to the massive bandwidth of modern systems. To truly unlock AI’s potential in daily life, she believes we need new forms of human–computer interaction. Her proposal? - Move beyond words. - Shift to eye contact, gestures, micro-movements, and immersive interfaces. In other words: XR (extended reality) as the bridge toward intuitive, high-bandwidth human-AI symbiosis. With affordable smart glasses and head-mounted devices finally arriving, XR can offer learning and working environments that are realistic, adaptive, and deeply personalized. This isn’t about replacing foundational knowledge — as Mar points out, you still need to understand film to make great movies with AI, or fashion to design with it. Instead, XR becomes the environment where that expertise can grow faster and more naturally. Karl Henrik Johansson H. Johansson, Director of Digital Futures, emphasized how critical this XR research is — not only for enabling people to harness the opportunities of digitalization, but also for driving new industries, jobs, and export potential. And with Stockholm ranked #1 among 241 European regions for innovation, thanks to strong collaboration across academia, industry, and the public sector, the timing couldn’t be better. If you’re curious about where human–AI interaction is headed — and how XR could reshape learning, work, and creativity — Mar’s talk is a must-watch.
