The intersect method in horizontal directional drilling involves drilling two boreholes and connecting them underground. But how does this work? Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) - most efficient for Dynamic Positioning (DP) One of the first positive experiences with Voith Schneider Propeller in Dynamic Positioning (DP) was on the Italian drilling vessel 'SAIPEM 2' in the 1970s. The ship has two retractable Voith Schneider Propeller VSP 26GI/165 in the bow.  At the stern, it has the largest Voith Schneider Propeller in terms of blade diameter, VSP 40GI/250 with a blade diameter of 4.0 m. Only the Voith ferries in New York (Andrew J. Barberi and Samuel J. Newhouse) also have VSPs with the same big diameter. Why is the VSP ideal for DP applications? Because it: 1.  has a unique thrust adjustment: transverse and longitudinal thrust can be adjusted very quickly and accurately according to X/Y-logic independently of each other, 2.  the VSP is insensitive to ventilation, which is important in rough seas, and 3.  it has a high thrust-to-power ratio across a wide range of inflow speeds. Two days of field work in Lincoln, NE, trying to optimize hollow stem auger (HSA) drilling operations using Measurement While Drilling (MWD) technology. We have instrumented Nebraska Department of Transportation ‘s drill rig (Geoprobe Systems® 3230DT drill rig) with MWD sensors and data acquisition system from LIM Group. Thanks to National Road Research Alliance, Minnesota Department of Transportation , and Nebraska Department of Transportation for the financial support of this project.
