This post is Part 2 of a 3-part series on re-introducing pre-aggregated OLAP after being on the backburner for the past 15 years or so--behind the Cloud, MPP data warehouses, machine learning, and now AI. Very often, technologies that are superseded aren't necessarily obsolete. For example, rule-based-expert systems of the 1980s, semantic web and knowledge graphs of the 2000s, and deep learning of the 2010s are still relevant as components that fill out different aspects of an AI system. It's similar to how we wouldn't think the neocortex is all there is to human intelligence. In that way, the primary value of OLAP cubes, a user-friendly semantic layer and substantially faster query results and higher query concurrency through smart aggregation design, are still a part of a full analytics platform.
