The “actual upside” of networking later in your career: (even if you’re not looking for a job right now) 1. You become resilient to a layoff. If your company started making layoffs tomorrow, you wouldn’t be scrambling for a job. With a strong network, there’s an audience for you to speak with, not just a screen full of job listings to stare at. A single connection could land you your next move. Instantly. 2. You future-proof your career. Your industry knowledge might be strong now, but it could fade.  Continuing to stay on top of developments in your field keeps new connections and new ideas coming to you. When your industry shifts, you're already plugged into the people doing interesting things. 3. You become more valuable to your employer and clients. Companies and customers need the kind of insights a strong network generates. If you bring that for free, you’ve got leverage to ask for more. 4. You get access to opportunties others don't know exist. Speaking gigs, advisory roles, partnership opportunities don’t show up on job boards. They find people who are already known and trusted. 5. You build something that works even when you don’t. You don’t need to hustle daily. A couple of consistent, clear, thoughtful efforts each week is plenty. Continuing to make new connections and engage in discussions builds momentum and your presence is visible for weeks. Okay, now the “downside”: - A few of your peers and colleagues might think you’re “trying too hard.” (until they start asking how you did it) The upside easily outweighs that. Build your pipeline now — your next great boss is probably in a conversation you haven’t had yet. 5. Know when to move on — a great boss will support your next move. Because in the end, who you work for shapes who you become.
