Onshore Wind Growth Hindered by Transmission Capacity

Underdeveloped transmission capacity is impeding the development of onshore wind infrastructure in the United States and throughout the European Union, with only 3.9 gigawatts (GW) of new onshore wind capacity added in 2024. Onshore wind boosters believe that overall investment in grid infrastructure and the implementation of Dynamic Line Rating, or reactive programs and data collection systems that can adjust grid load in real-time, could significantly reduce transmission barriers and speed the development of future onshore wind installations.
