Due to differing expectations around #development speed, cost, #innovation and more, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to supporting customers in different regions of the world. At GKN Automotive, this is reflected in our tailored methodologies such as our long held “in China, for China”, “in Europe, for Europe” and “collaborate to compete” strategies which have helped establish us as a trusted partner for 90% of global OEMs. The importance of such an approach was reinforced at the Europe-China New Energy Vehicle Technology Conference, which took place in Munich yesterday. Bringing together key decision makers from new #energy powertrain innovation technologies across China and Europe, the event was attended by GKN Automotive’s Dawei Wang, Chief Engineer Customer Engineering China; and Fei SONG, Chinese OEM Account Director.

Can European industrial and policy strategies (capex, incentives, R&D) support a sustainable transition? The European Automotive Industry in Crisis: Margins Under Pressure 1. A Challenging Context • Falling margins: According to the Global Automotive Supplier Study 2025 by Roland Berger and Lazard, the global average margin for the automotive industry dropped to 4.7% in 2024. European suppliers are performing worse than average, at 3.6%, far behind their Chinese peers at 5.7% (rolandberger.com, lazard.com). • OEMs under strain: The average EBIT of European automakers dropped by up to 6.5 percentage points in the first nine months of 2024, accompanied by a decline of about 1 million units sold (scoperatings.com). 2. Suppliers in Deep Trouble • Sentiment is grim: 64% of suppliers report a negative outlook, 68% expect low profits, and 38% fear operating at break-even or at a loss in 2024 (clepa.eu). • Layoffs are massive: Bosch, ZF Friedrichshafen, Continental, and Schaeffler together announced about 54,000 job cuts in 2024 — surpassing even pandemic-era levels (https://lnkd.in/d5tinaxB). 3. Reactive, but Limited Strategies • OEMs like Stellantis are embracing aggressive cost-cutting, relocating engineering work to lower-cost markets such as Brazil and India, and consolidating technology platforms (lemonde.fr). • Regulatory pressure, such as CO₂ penalties and the forced transition to EVs, is eroding the traditionally higher margins of combustion-engine models (forbes.com, marketwatch.com, reuters.com, wsj.com). 4. An Uncertain Horizon • Some analysts (e.g. Morgan Stanley) predict a rebound in 2025, driven by improved financial accessibility and potential government incentives (marketwatch.com). • Others are more cautious: Schaeffler expects negative margins of -14% to -17% in its e-mobility division and sees no automotive market recovery in 2025 (reuters.com).
