Freiburg’s city hall is the world’s first public building built to the net-surplus-energy standard, meaning it generates more energy than it consumes. Opened in 2017, it incorporates photovoltaic panels on the roof and façade, geothermal energy for heating and cooling, and a highly efficient mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery. The surplus energy produced is fed back into the city grid. This building also includes a day nursery and offices for 840 city administration employees who were previously spread across multiple locations. The city hall is a key example of Freiburg’s broader sustainability goals, which include achieving 100% renewable energy by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2050. The building embodies PassivHaus standards, focusing on low energy demand for heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water. Freiburg’s approach integrates green urban planning, protecting large green areas and promoting biking and walking as sustainable transportation methods. The city hall’s design also forms a “green campus” integrated into the nearby park areas, creating public pedestrian routes and enhancing urban space. Thus, Freiburg’s city hall is a flagship project showcasing sustainable architecture, energy-efficient technology, and the city’s commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in public infrastructure.

Attune was proud to contribute to the newly released Driving Action on Indoor Air Monitoring in Commercial Buildings report from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Developed with insights from leaders across policy, research, operations, and technology, the report examines both the opportunities and challenges of using low-cost sensors to monitor indoor air quality in commercial spaces. It identifies where action can be taken now and where further standards, consensus, and innovation are needed to advance adoption. Our contribution focused on how real-time, building-level air quality data can connect policy ambitions with measurable results. Inside, you’ll find: - Market, policy, and technology pathways for scaling IAQ monitoring - Collaboration opportunities across the building industry - Next steps for creating healthier, more resilient spaces This publication marks an important milestone toward making proactive IAQ monitoring standard practice. Germany has found a smart way to tackle two challenges at once—by installing solar panels on highway noise barriers. These walls, already built to block the roar of traffic, are now being transformed into sources of clean energy. By using existing structures instead of building separate solar farms, no extra land is needed. The panels capture sunlight and turn it into electricity to power homes and businesses, reducing both noise pollution for nearby residents and reliance on non-renewable energy. This innovative approach blends practicality with sustainability, showing how thoughtful design can benefit people and the planet. Germany’s project is a shining example of how to make better use of the space we already have while promoting a cleaner, greener future.

🌿 🏘️ Defining Green Real Estate, also known as sustainable or eco-friendly real estate, refers to the practice of creating and managing properties that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout their lifecycle. This concept encompasses a wide array of practices, from the construction of new buildings to the retrofitting and efficient management of existing structures. At its core, green real estate is about reducing the environmental impact of buildings while enhancing the health and well-being of their occupants. #GreenRealEstate CIM blog The International Energy Agency reports that buildings and construction are responsible for 36% of global energy use and 39% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions annually. Green real estate aims to significantly reduce these figures by integrating sustainability into every facet of building design, construction, and operation. https://lnkd.in/eDxKbss7 #builtenvironment #greenrealestate #sustainableliving 🏡 👉https://lnkd.in/etAbcjuP 🌍🌏🌎
