Automating Serial Port Detection for Seamless Console Access! 🚀 As a Network Engineer, accessing console terminals during device migrations is a routine but critical task. In scenarios where I need to console into multiple devices — each showing up on a different COM port — manually checking Device Manager and launching PuTTY for each one was slowing me down. To eliminate this friction, I developed a simple PowerShell script that automatically detects available serial ports, prioritizes preferred ones, and launches PuTTY with the correct port. This small automation has significantly improved my efficiency during migrations. It’s a small one, but it’s made a big difference in my workflow. Sharing in case it helps others in the networking space! 😊 ⚙️ Steps to Automate PuTTY Console Access Using PowerShell 1. Prepare Your Environment ✅ Ensure PuTTY is installed on your system. Default path: C:\Program Files\PuTTY\putty.exe If installed elsewhere, update the script with the correct path. 2. Open PowerShell Launch Windows PowerShell as Administrator (recommended for full access). 3. Create the Script Copy and paste the following code into a new .ps1 file (e.g., LaunchConsole.ps1): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ $ports = [System.IO.Ports.SerialPort]::GetPortNames() $puttyPath = "C:\Program Files\PuTTY\putty.exe" $preferredPorts = "COM1", "COM2", "COM4", "COM5", "COM6", "COM7", "COM8", "COM9", "COM10", "COM11" $selectedPort = $preferredPorts | Where-Object { $ports -contains $_ } | Select-Object -First 1 if ($selectedPort) { Start-Process -FilePath $puttyPath -ArgumentList "-serial $selectedPort" Write-Host "PuTTY launched with $selectedPort" } else { Write-Host "No COM port found. Available ports: $($ports -join ', ')" } ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Run the Script Navigate to the folder where the script is saved. Run it using PowerShell: 5. Observe the Output If a preferred COM port is detected: PuTTY will launch automatically with that port. You’ll see: PuTTY launched with COMX If no preferred port is found: You’ll see a list of available ports. #PowerShell #Networking #Automation #ConsoleAccess #PuTTY #NetworkEngineer #Tools #TimeSaver #WorkSmarter

5 Minutes With… Moran Alony (Part 2) — Microsoft Intune Integration In this follow-up episode, Moran Alony, Senior Product Manager for DEX Security & Compliance at ControlUp, shares one of the most significant milestones yet for Controller for Compliance: native Microsoft Intune integration. Moran explains how this changes the game for patch and compliance management. Instead of requiring new agents or parallel systems, ControlUp for Compliance now leverages existing Intune infrastructure, allowing IT teams to detect vulnerabilities, deploy updates, and track compliance without reworking their environment. Key takeaways: Seamless integration — use your existing Intune footprint to manage vulnerabilities and missing patches. Automated patch delivery — create Intune jobs or apps to roll out updates faster and more reliably. Continuous scanning — unlike standard Intune delays, Co4C scans as often as every hour for real-time visibility. Operational efficiency — cut down IT workload while improving response times to new threats. Customer-driven evolution — Moran highlights how feedback is shaping the roadmap for even stronger compliance tools.
