UK-US Quantum Pact ⚛️: What’s in It and Why It Matters I’m proud to have been a part of the brilliant team leading the negotiation efforts behind this agreement. There were late nights, last-minute trips to Washington DC, and even meetings with our US colleagues as far afield as Tokyo. More than anything, it’s been about listening, learning, and finding common ground. I’m genuinely grateful to everyone involved—across government, industry, and academia—who brought their expertise and commitment to the table. By working together, the UK and US are taking practical steps to help quantum technologies deliver real benefits in the years ahead. What we’ve agreed to do together: 👉 Establish a joint benchmarking taskforce for quantum hardware, software, and algorithms—creating trusted measures and laying the groundwork for global standards. 👉 Launch a transatlantic Quantum Code Challenge to mobilise top researchers on practical algorithm problems in energy, drug discovery, and materials. 👉 Deepen collaboration between national labs and centres of excellence to advance quantum sensing for early disease detection and infrastructure resilience. 👉 Coordinate pre‑standardisation efforts so systems are secure, interoperable, and aligned with our shared values. 👉 Create a Quantum Industry Exchange Programme to support adoption across defence, health, finance, and energy. Ultimately, quantum progress is a global challenge. The answers we’re all looking for—e.g. which quantum computing modalities will shape the future—will only come from working together, across borders and disciplines. Big thanks to all our expert advisors who helped shape this: Peter Knight, Derek Craig, Jonathan Legh-Smith MBE, Roger McKinlay, Michael Cuthbert, Cyrus Larijani, Tim Prior, Liz K., Abby Casey, Andrew Daley, Elham Kashefi, Douglas J Paul, Dave Smith, Dr Stephen Moore CEng CPhys, Kedar Pandya and many many many others. Well done Josh!
Very well-planned indeed, congratulations! Launching a transatlantic Quantum Code Challenge on practical algorithm problems in energy, materials, and drug discovery is a great initiative. Looking forward to see more details.
Well done to you and colleagues Josh! Great job!
The detail in the US-UK MOU is impressive. It shows the insight into the challenges and opportunities facing the sector that has been brought to bear. If this can be executed upon it is set to shape development of the sector not just across the Atlantic, but also globally!
Great work, congrats to you and the team!!
Brilliant work Josh Fedder 🙌
Director of the National Quantum Computing Centre
5dfantastic work Josh to bring together such a comprehensive agreement
