Research Symposium 2025 on Patient Safety at JSMU Jinnah Sindh Medical University organized a student-led Research Symposium on Patient Safety under the theme “Patient Safety: The Foundation of Quality Care.” Vice Chancellor Professor Amjad Siraj Memon stated that empowering JSMU students to become champions for safe care is a fundamental part of their education and emphasized that young clinicians are not just the future but essential change-makers in designing a safer healthcare system today. The symposium was organized by Students’ Voice for Patient Safety (SVoPS) under the Centre for Patient Safety (CoPS) and focused on critical issues such as AI errors, physician burnout, and cognitive bias. More than twenty research projects were presented and evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges, including Dr. Syed Tafazzul Hyder Zaidi, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, Dr. Haleema Yasmeen, Chairperson of Ward 9, and Dr. Syeda Kausar Ali, Chairperson of the Institute of Medical Education (IME). The winners were M. Hassan, who secured first position, Rabya Mohammad Iqbal, who secured second position, and Tahir Abdul Qadir, who secured third position. The event concluded with the distribution of certificates and shields to the winners, reflecting JSMU’s dedication to promoting patient safety and advancing research skills among its students. #JSMU #jsmucommunications #SDG3goodhealthandwellbeing #SDG4QualityEducation https://lnkd.in/dTj5BK-n

What can intensive care teach us about the future of patient safety? From ‘Techno-salvationist Bollocks’ to why ‘I don’t know’ saves lives — here are 10 lessons from the ICU that I presented in the James Reason lecture at HSJ Patient Safety Congress & Awards with Shaun Lintern today: 1/ “The purpose of power is to give it away.” Safety isn’t about one expert — it’s about empowering patients, families & frontline staff so that many small voices prevent big mistakes. 2/ “Safety for us is the choreography of managing doubt.” In ICU, certainty is rare. What matters is creating systems that are resilient because they embrace uncertainty. 3/ “Engineer the routine rituals so we can think about the exceptional.” Protocols, handovers, checklists — the scaffolding that lets us face chaos with clarity. 4/ “All healthcare should be evidence based or evidence generating.” Even the most vulnerable deserve care that adds to knowledge as well as survival. 5/ “‘I don’t know’ are the most underused words in medicine.” Admitting uncertainty builds trust, invites second opinions, and protects against dogma. 6/ “Taskification amputates judgment not to save lives but to save KPIs. Every time we turn judgment into a task, somewhere a homeopath starts a podcast.” 7/ Techno-salvationist Bollocks. Ventilators don’t care for patients. Dashboards don’t deliver dignity. Apps don’t hold hands. Tech must serve people, not replace them. 8/ “We are trusted to save lives at 3 a.m. but not trusted to claim a train fare to learn how.” Burnout is fuelled not by breaking bad news, but by bureaucracy and undervaluing staff. 9/ “The availability of good medical care tends to vary inversely with the need for it… In digital healthcare, the best signal always seems to reach those who need it least. We don’t need Google Glasses to classify stool charts. We do need someone to wipe the patient’s bum.” 10/ “You can’t always save a life, you can always save a death. Every patient wants someone to make sense of their story.” Safety is not just technical. It is human. Sorting through all the different titles in health care can feel overwhelming. We hear you. Many people share that they are unsure what those titles mean or who is truly qualified to guide them. Matthew Sokol is a Board Certified Medical Doctor (MD) and an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner (IFMCP). His background includes more than 20 years in medicine along with advanced certification in functional medicine (a title held by less than 1% of physicians worldwide). Knowing your practitioner’s credentials helps you feel confident you are getting the type of care you want. Asking about them is always worth it. #McKinneyTX #ProsperTX #FriscoTX #DallasHealth #ConciergeMedicine #FunctionalMedicine #MedicalDoctor #PhysicianCare #RootCauseMedicine

This review article discusses the growing demand for aesthetic procedures, which leads to an influx of providers entering the field, many of whom lack formal training in aesthetic medicine. The absence of standardized education and certification poses significant risks to patient safety, including improper technique, adverse complications, and unethical practice. Without clear regulatory oversight, nonmedically trained individuals and inadequately trained healthcare professionals offer aesthetic treatments, leading to inconsistent outcomes and diminished public trust in the field. This article examines the urgent need for regulated training and certification to establish competency benchmarks and ensure patient safety.
